Non-Discrimination Policy

Our mission is to radically improve education in the juvenile and criminal justice systems by investing in the potential and dignity of all its students. We extend that same dignity to everyone: our staff, our partners, and the people we serve.

Our commitment

BreakFree Education does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, ancestry, immigration or citizenship status, religion or creed, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, familial status, family responsibilities, personal appearance, political affiliation, source of income, credit information, homeless status, military or veteran status, or status as a survivor of domestic or sexual violence. We also do not discriminate on the basis of arrest or conviction record.

Who and what this covers

This policy applies to our board of directors, staff, fellows, volunteers, consultants, and contractors. It covers every decision we make, including:

  • recruiting, hiring, pay, benefits, training, promotion, discipline, and termination;

  • appointing and removing board members;

  • selecting volunteers, fellows, consultants, and vendors;

  • who may take part in our trainings, initiatives, and programs;

  • how we choose classrooms and teachers to support and distribute books and materials to; and

  • how we judge and recognize student work.

Accessibility

We provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities and for religious practice, for job applicants, employees, and everyone who takes part in our programs. To ask for an accommodation, contact the Executive Director.

Criminal records

We believe in second chances, and a criminal record does not bar anyone from working or volunteering with BreakFree Education. Some of our work includes visits to secure facilities. When a host facility requires a background check, the facility runs the background check and decides who may enter. We consider a record only when it bears directly on the duties of a specific role.

Harassment and retaliation

Harassment based on any characteristic listed above is a form of discrimination and is not tolerated. We will not retaliate against anyone who raises a concern in good faith or takes part in a review.

Raising a concern

Anyone who believes this policy has been violated may raise the concern with the Executive Director. If the concern involves the Executive Director, contact the Designee of the Board of Directors. Concerns are reviewed promptly and kept as confidential as a fair review allows. The Executive Director reports each concern and its outcome to the board.

Adoption and review

Adopted by the Board of Directors of BreakFree Education on October 29, 2026. The board reviews this policy at least every three years. This policy is posted publicly at www.breakfree-ed.org/nondiscrimination-policy.
