Break Free Magazine
Break Free Magazine is a space for students in the JJ system to share their voices, celebrate their journey of growth, and inspire others along the way. We believe everyone is on a path of self-discovery, and our pages are filled with stories that honor this process.
Our content focuses on promoting well-being and resilience, featuring stories of overcoming challenges and finding new passions. Our goal is to create a supportive community where students can share their stories, celebrate their progress, and inspire one another.

The Break Free Magazine got its start when a handful of teachers from around the country expressed an interest in sharing student work and creating a joint publication that students in facilities could access and relate to. We’re excited to support them and hope that many more teachers will join in by sharing student pieces in the future. In the future, we’re looking to build a student editorial team, as well.
We are committed to amplifying student voices. We are looking for work that is original and speaks from your personal experience. This can include anything from poetry and short stories to drawings, song lyrics, and articles. All submissions are reviewed to ensure they align with our mission to create a positive, empowering publication.

Note to Educators:
In addition to student submissions, we welcome contributions from educators. Each issue features a piece written by a teacher, counselor, or mentor that offers thoughtful reflection or guidance grounded in wellbeing, mindfulness, creativity, or escape. These might include strategies for managing stress, reflections on personal growth, mindfulness practices, or creative perspectives meant to inspire and support the young people we serve.
